Chapter 16: Living with Constancy
“Empty yourself of everything.
Let the mind rest at peace.
The ten thousand things rise and fall while the Self watches their return.
They grow and flourish and then return to the source.
Returning to the source is stillness, which is the way of nature.”
This verse encourages us to embrace the cycles of life and to return, over and over, to stillness, inner peace, and constancy in our being.
Wayne Dyer interprets this as an invitation to become a steady observer, someone who watches life’s highs and lows without getting swept away by them. The “ten thousand things” (a Taoist phrase for all material and changing forms) will rise and fall, come and go — but your inner essence remains unchanged.
Living with constancy means rooting yourself in what is eternal: your spirit, your connection to Source, and the present moment. While the world changes, you remain deeply grounded and aware.
Key Concepts:
There is power in resting in the unchanging within.
Stillness is the nature of the Tao.
Everything in life changes — but you can remain steady.
Constancy means returning to presence again and again.
Actionable Steps: Living with Constancy
- Practise Daily Stillness
- Begin or end each day with silence — no goals, no effort, just being.
- This resets your nervous system and connects you to what’s eternal.
- Observe Without Attachment
- When something “good” or “bad” happens, practise saying:
“This too is passing.” - Remind yourself that nothing lasts — and that’s OK.
- When something “good” or “bad” happens, practise saying:
- Stay Rooted When Life Changes
- In times of chaos or success, return to simple practices: breathwork, nature, prayer, or journaling.
- Let these be your anchors — not achievements or emotions.
- Release the Need to Control
- Stop trying to force life into permanence or predictability.
- Trust the rise and fall of things, and find your peace within that flow.
- Live from Inner Stability
- Cultivate a calm inner centre you return to throughout the day.
- Let that stability inform your decisions, instead of reacting to emotions or pressures.
- Honour Natural Cycles
- Recognise the seasons in your own life — times to grow, rest, let go, and renew.
- Don’t resist change; observe it, accept it, and return to yourself.
