Chapter 73: Living in Heaven’s Net
“A brave and passionate person will kill or be killed.
A brave and calm person will always preserve life.
Of these two kinds of bravery, one leads to gain, the other to loss.
Heaven dislikes what it dislikes—who knows the reason why?
Even the sage is unsure of this.
Heaven’s net is vast; though its meshes are wide, nothing slips through.”
— Tao Te Ching, Verse 73
This verse contrasts two forms of bravery:
- Forceful, passionate courage, driven by ego and aggression.
- Peaceful, calm courage, rooted in wisdom and presence.
Lao Tzu reminds us that the Tao (or “Heaven”) operates according to its own divine laws—not human logic or emotion. While force may seem effective in the short term, it often brings harm. In contrast, quiet courage preserves life, aligns with the Tao, and requires surrender to what we cannot control.
Wayne Dyer interprets this as a lesson in trusting divine timing and justice. We are part of a cosmic order where nothing escapes Heaven’s net—not even the smallest injustice or action. You don’t have to control outcomes. Just live rightly.
